Who Was Sanford Moeller?

Sanford Moeller is a drummer who lived in the late 1800’s and early 1900’s. He observed, and was fascinated by the way Civil War drummers could play the drums for large portions of the day without getting tired or exhausted. He spent many years analyzing the way that these drummers held their drum sticks, and the motions and techniques that they were using. Sanford Moeller also noticed that they were able to make very consistent sounds even though their drums were sub-par, and their drum skins were old and rippled.

Sanford Moeller didn’t create, nor does he claim to have created the Moeller Method, but he is responsible for promoting the method to less observant drummers during his life time. His favorite student and protégé, Jim Chapin has since taken what he has learned from Sanford Moeller and taught many other drummers like Mike Michalkow.

The observations that Sanford Moeller formalized are becoming more and more popular, and the name Sanford Moeller is starting to come up all over drum forums and discussion pages. Although not much is known about Sanford’s life, there is no doubt that his drumming has affected many people. He has been a great contributor to modern drumming, and his efforts to formally advance drumming should be appreciated by every drummer who can hold a drumstick.
